Legendary Rapper and Actor Chino XL Passes Away at 50

The family of cult rapper and actor Chino XL has revealed that he died at the age of 50.


The family of the legendary rapper published the following message on Tuesday, July 30, using his social media account: "The family of Derek Keith Barbosa, professionally known as Chino XL, is devastated to relay the news of his passing." On Sunday, July 28, 2024, in the morning, Chino passed away at home. He was fifty years old. The statement continued, "Chino is survived by his mother, Carole; his former long-term companion, Stephanie; his children, Chynna, Bella, Lyric, and Kiyana; his stepson, Shawn; and his grandchildren, Emmy, Emery, Chris, Luis, and Dyani.

His daughters reflected in a joint statement, saying, "Our father had numerous titles, such as Puerto Rican Superhero and King of Punchlines, but the most significant one was Girl Dad. And in that role, what he gave us most was strength, directness, and an incredibly accurate portrayal. We are currently experiencing a sense of serenity, mostly because our father is at rest." "The family asks for privacy at this time," they said in closing. There will soon be information about a dedication.


The reason for his passing remained undisclosed, and it is unclear whether Chino XL was experiencing health issues.Soon, condolences from the hip-hop scene began to flood in, from people like Chuck D, Joe Budden, and ScHoolboy Q. Chuck wrote on X (previously Twitter) to express his grief for the passing of DJ Polo and Chino: This one is rough. As a peer of ⁦@hiphopgods⁩, I looked up to Dj Polo. ♦@CHINOXL⁩ was my art and rhyme brother. He urged me to move forward with my graphics. We traded art books with each other. He took better care of my lyric books. He was in favor of my events. We gave his music our backing.


Budden merely said, "Damn... "Rip to the legend, Chino XL," wrote Q, and Chino XL, Q wrote.


Chino's regular collaborator KXNG Crooked wrote an emotional tribute on social media, saying, "We laughed and spoke over the phone the other day. We've been connected professionally ever since the Wake Up Show freestyles several years ago. Rest In Peace to the legend Chino XL
